The miracle of rescue: Dog goes from sick, pregnant, street waif to pampered princess

Lucky Mandi found heaven in the home of adopter Gitte and family

by Katerina Lorenzatos Makris ~

Friend Gitte Kit Cordsen sent a gorgeous Christmas photo of our foster girl Mandi, whom she adopted in 2012. For Hubsy and me and for our wonderful crew and supporters at Rescue Diva, there can be no gift on the entire planet better than photos like these, made possible by the miracle of rescue.

When we first spotted Mandi just before Easter of 2012 on the Greek island of Kefalonia, she was wandering the streets sick, pregnant, and terrified. But in just a few months’ time… presto chango!… she became a pampered Danish princess.

Rescue Diva provided Mandi’s initial fostering and veterinary expenses but we needed amazing adoption group Graeske Hunde in Denmark to create the happily ever after.

Thanks forever to the volunteers and supporters of Graeske Hunde for making miracles like this happen every day. For Mandi’s miracle there were Malene Falcham Ziegler, Laura Falcham Ziegler and their whole, sweet family who fostered her. They served as a beautiful “bridge” to her new life. Others in the Graeske Hunde crew such as Benedikte Bjerre, Frederikke Marie Sand, June Vikkelsø, Tina Panoutsopoulou, Tina K Nielsen also played important roles in creating for this sweet girl the life she deserves.

And of course special thanks to Mandi’s forever mommy Gitte and her wonderful husband and family, including Mandi’s forever grandma Sonja Nielsen.

You have all given this sad, forgotten girl a life of pure heaven. You lovingly recognized the great beauty inside and out of this little diamond in the rough.

Also thanks to Peter Cherrington for introducing us to Graeske Hunde, to Dr. Amanda Micheletti for performing Mandi’s difficult spay surgery, to Pat Dolman of Kefalonia Animal Trust (KATs) for covering the cost of that surgery, and for the endless moral and practical support from both of those ladies on this and countless more rescue adventures.

Wishing you all happy, healthy holidays!
